Multiple barcodes per item is now available for all locations and in the retail item library
The feature that allows multiple barcodes for an item, which was announced in limited release on 2025-06-25, is now available at all Toast POS locations.
You can also now add multiple barcodes using the retail item library. Previously, you had to add multiple barcodes using the SKUs setting on an item's classic details page in Toast Web. For more information on adding multiple barcodes using either method, see this Toast Central article.
The multiple barcodes feature allows you to assign multiple barcodes, or SKUs, to a single item. This is especially useful when:
A supplier updates the barcode for the same product (for example, due to new packaging).
You source the same item from different suppliers and they each use a unique barcode.
When a barcode is scanned, the Toast POS app considers all of the barcodes assigned to an item when looking for a match. The same is true when searching for an item by SKU on the Toast POS app.
You no longer need to create duplicate items to account for barcode changes. Eliminating the need to create duplicate items improves improves inventory accuracy and reporting. If you have created duplicate items as a workaround for multiple barcodes, Toast support recommends selecting one of them as the primary item, adding all applicable barcode numbers to it, and archiving the others.
